Harry Potter, Dracula, and Frankenstein: Supernatural Fear and the Gothic in J.K. Rowling's Bestselling Novels
As the Harry Potter books progress, so do their dark and frightening elements. From Boggarts to Dementors to Horcruxes to dark rituals of blood, it's no wonder some grown-ups have been concerned that Harry Potter is too scary for children. But these elements of supernatural fear are essential to the story. Travis Prinzi takes a look at the frightening elements of the Harry Potter books, explains their history and place in the story, and unveils how the story's Gothic setting contributes to its message. We'll discover that it might just be a good thing to be scared by Harry!
