I love the Harry Potter books but, unfortunately, none of my friends feel the same way. Rather than annoying them by constantly talking about the books, I thought I would seek out some like-minded people.
This sounds strange, but Snape. I'm not nasty to people at all, but I can relate to the sadness and disappointment that he feels. I also relate to his sense of being an outsider, of never being able to have the things that others take for granted.
My mother started reading the first one to my niece when she was about 6 (she's now 15). I picked it up, and the rest is history.
I guess I would say Half-Blood Prince. I like that it has the structure of the school year to pull it together, unlike Deathly Hallows, but it also has a building sense of menace and begins to really develop a lot of the themes.
I'm going to have to say Snape again. I think he's the bravest character in the book, and the most complex. He embodies the idea that we are what we choose to be, yet he never believes it of himself. I find him a very poignant character.
Gryffindor, of course. Isn't everyone?
