I'd have to say Harry Potter, not because I'm the "chosen one" or anything like that but I can relate to the way he grew up, and how he did not let that define his character, which I didn't either. To me, that alone makes him a hero.
I bought my wife the series, then to share the experience with her, I started reading them. I was hooked from page 1.
Goblet of Fire because it really showed the enormity of the wizard world which you never got a real feel for until you learned that there were at least two other schools.
Severus Snape because he honored his love for Lily Evans Potter to the end.
